Rickwood Field in Birmingham

There is simply no ballpark like Rickwood Field. Well, there used to be a few but those are long gone. Rickwood is still standing nearly a century after it was built in 1910, when it became the first concrete and steel stadium used in the Minor Leagues. Today it is the oldest surviving professional ballpark still used in the United States.

Rickwood Field was last used on a regular basis by a pro team in 1987. After that season the Birmingham Barons bolted for the suburbs. But Rickwood beckons them back once a year for the annual Rickwood Classic and fans once again fill "the finest minor league ballpark ever." That was the mantra of Rick Woodward when he built the ballpark. These are the pictures of how it looks 98 years later. Enjoy.
