Last Night at Cleveland Stadium
There will likely never again be a bigger crowd to watch baseball in Cleveland than the 72,454 who showed up for the last game under Municipal Stadium's lights on October 1, 1993, which was when this panorama of the city's mammoth lakefront stadium was taken. Built on a former garbage dump on the shores of Lake Erie, the location provided the inspiration for the stadium's oft-repeated and derisive nickname, The Mistake by the Lake. Championed in 1928 by the citizens' committee that was hoping to get it built as a place where "Receptions for Famous Visitors" could be held, Cleveland Municipal Stadium hosted many of baseball's immortals and great moments, proof of which is contained in this poster. "Joe DiMaggio Had His Legendary 56-Game Hitting Streak Stopped Here," stated the outfield scoreboards on the facade of the double-decked grandstand when this panoramic photo was taken. That is just one of the many things that jumps out in this vivid image of the gigantic structure that was demolished 37 months after the Indians left for a new and downsized ballpark a handful of blocks south.
While it may have never been a thing of beauty, old Cleveland Stadium looks like a million bucks - and then some - in this poster, which serves as a lasting legacy to the first ballpark to be built with public funds on the final night that the public filled its numerous seats to watch the Indians play.
