Last Pitch at County Stadium
For almost five full decades the nation's second publicly financed ballpark stood at 201 S. 46th Street on the west side of Milwaukee. Over its 48 seasons of use, 64,865,253 fans watched baseball in County Stadium, but no regular season crowd was ever larger than the 56,354 that turned out for the final game to be played within its confines, which took place on the afternoon of September 28, 2000 between the Reds and Brewers. This unbelievably vivid panorama of the last pitch ever thrown in the longtime home of The Crew was taken at 5:42 pm on that day and the clarity of the print is so crisp that both the digitally displayed time on the scoreboard and streaking ball, hurled by Elmer Dessens to Mark Loretta, are clearly visible. So too is the looming presence of the old stadium's almost completed successor, Miller Park, which the same two teams would inaugurate 190 days later. By then County Stadium was but a memory, but one that is forever preserved thanks to this poster and its sweeping vista of Milwaukee's house of memories.
