Last Pitch at Veterans Stadium
The Phillies played 2,642 games over 33 seasons at Veterans Stadium and Chase Utley only appeared in 23 of them, but the future All-Star second basemen was at the plate when Atlanta's Jason Marquis threw the final pitch in the stadium's history on September 28, 2003. That pitch can be seen streaking towards Utley in this vivid panorama, which also captures everything the Vet was noted, or notorious, for, such as the hulking grandstand that surrounded the fake grass playing field to more friendly touches, like the replica Liberty Bell above the 700-level and the circular markers behind the outfield wall that listed the years the Phillies won the pennant (in left field) and the names of those who had their numbers retired by the team (in right field).
When it was all said and done, 68,222,781 had paid their way into Veterans Stadium to watch the Phillies from 1971 to 2003, including 58,554 for the final time. Although the Phils won 1,426 of the games played at the Vet, they lost the final one, 5-2, when Utley hit into a game and stadium-ending double play; 175 days later it was imploded in 62 seconds. "You can't keep concrete and steel, but you can keep the memories," former Philly pitcher Steve Bedrosian said on Veteran Stadium's final game day. Thanks to this panoramic poster those memories will never be forgotten.
