First Pitch at Tropicana Field
This Is It!!! Written on the Tropicana Field message board, that phrase summed up the sentiments of an entire region. Tampa Bay residents had waited a long time to have a Major League team of their own, and 45,369 of them filled the St. Petersburg-based dome on March 31, 1998 for its inaugural baseball game and corresponding debut of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The long-awaited and history making first pitch, thrown by Wilson Alvarez at precisely 5:08 p.m. to Detroit's Brian Hunter, is captured in this vivid panoramic print. You can actually see the ball in mid-flight, the time on an outfield scoreboard, and the Devil Rays' corner infielders - Hall of Famer Wade Boggs and Tampa-born Fred McGriff - playing in to guard against the bunt. Also visible in perfect clarity are the dome's notorious catwalks, the original AstroTurf playing field and ballpark layout, which had the bullpens behind the right field wall. Much has changed since Tampa Bay's first day in the big leagues, but this poster serves as an everlasting image of their debut.
