Last Pitch at Tiger Stadium
After 6,783 games over 88 seasons at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull this panoramic poster shows the last pitch ever thrown at Detroit's Grand Old Lady. That pitch was thrown by Tigers closer Todd Jones at precisely 7:07 p.m on September 27, 1999. You can actually see the ball in mid-flight and Kansas City's Carlos Beltran getting ready to swing at it. You can also see everything that Tiger Stadium was noted for in its final moment of glory, from the distinctive double deck grandstand to the uniquely shaped light towers to the flag pole in fair play to the retired numbers and championship banners on the right field facade. With camera flashbulbs going off in the stands, Beltran would swing and miss at Jones's 2-2 pitch, the Tigers an 8-2 winner in their final game at The Corner.
"Farewell, old friend Tiger Stadium. We will remember," Ernie Harwell said afterwards to close his farewell speech. And thanks to the vivid poster baseball fans will always be able to remember Tiger Stadium fondly.
