First Pitch at Safeco Field
On a hazy mid-summer evening in 1999 Safeco Field welcomed an interleague opponent and 44,607 fans to its grand opening in Seattle when the Mariners hosted the Padres in the ballpark's July 15th christening. Just 18 days prior the Mariners bid their original home, the Kingdome, adieu. Its domed roof was visible during its replacement's inaugural game and can be seen clearly beyond the left field wall in this panoramic print. But the subject of this poster is not the past home of the Mariners, but instead the first pitch thrown in the present one, which was captured in such vivid detail that you can actually see the ball, hurled by Seattle's Jamie Moyer, in mid-flight as it streaks towards San Diego's Quilvio Veras. Additionally, you can view everything that makes Seattle's ballpark one of baseball's best, all as it appeared on the first day Safeco Field was eligible to make that claim.
