Riverfront Stadium/Cinergy Field
It may have been one of the derided cookie-cutters, but Cincinnati's multi-purpose stadium is where some of the best baseball in major league history was played thanks to the great Big Red Machine teams of the 1970s. Even though it was only around for 32 years, a lot of Reds history happened here. Most notably, they won three World Series and played five within the circular stadium's confines. (The Reds have only made the World Series four times, and were just twice victorious, when playing anywhere else in Cincinnati.) Known as Riverfront Stadium for its first 27 seasons and covered by Astroturf for all but its final two, Cinergy Field was the turfed venue's name when this sweeping panorama of the Reds' nearly 53,000-seat stadium was taken on September 10, 1998, when just about all of the seats were sold for a game against the Cardinals. Just two days prior, Mark McGwire had hit his record-breaking 62nd homer of the season in St. Louis and 50,971 fans turned out in Cincy to see the new home run king, who is at bat while most of the crowd is on its feet as Mike Remlinger throws an 0-2 pitch to the out-of-towner everybody came to watch.
That's the on field scene captured, but the stadium and not the batter is what really matters, and all four levels of Riverfront/Cinergy can be viewed, along with the features of its classic for the era design. Namely, that is the vastness of the place, which is topped in center field by a lengthy monochrome matrix scoreboard. The clarity of the print is as good as it gets, so you can read all the data on the scoreboard and see Big Mac's mug on the nearby JumboTron that's next to the much bigger Marlboro Man billboard. If you look close enough, you can also see the football field lines on the green carpet that was also used by the Bengals but will always be more fondly remembered as the home of the Reds during their greatest period of prominence.
