First Pitch at Petco Park
The first official pitch thrown at Petco Park occurred on April 8, 2004 and was captured mid-flight in this panoramic poster. Thrown by San Diego native David Wells, the ballpark's inaugural pitch would be taken for a strike by San Francisco's Ray Durham at precisely 7:07 p.m. You can see that pitch, and so much more, in this poster of PETCO Park.
San Diego's new playground - complete with a center field "beach" - looked magnificent on its first ever Opening Night and the clarity of this print is magnificent too. From the fans in attendance, to the ads on the outfield walls and the bunting hanging from the Western Metal Supply building, every detail is captured in vivid focus. The only thing missing is the skyscrapers that had yet to be built beyond the outfield, but you can see a pair of construction cranes getting ready to start that job. Most importantly, with the completion of Petco Park baseball had finally arrived in downtown San Diego and a new era of Padres baseball had begun.
